Show HN: Online speed reader for e-books
While looking at e-reader apps, I noticed that there were no speed reader web apps that let you read books (namely .epub files), so I decided to build one. I used the Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) technique, cutting out eye movement and letting me read quicker. It’s open-source on GitHub, so feel free to fork it or poke around. I’d love feedback! Especially if you’ve got ideas for features like better file support (PDFs?), pause-on-punctuation logic, or maybe a cleaner UI.

- _mitterpach 2y agoFor any speed readers out there, is there a specific speed you have settled down on, or do you always try to improve it by a bit? My understanding is that the comprehension goes down rapidly as you increase your speed, and despite being a pretty speedy reader, I often find myself turning back pages to understand information I did not quite absorb. Maybe I could do with a little bit less speed after all.
- yc-ank 2y agoHi there, thank you for your comment! I tend to hover around 500wpm without any loss of understanding when I read normally and I can go up to around 900wpm in RSVP reading. When I try to read "slower" or when I have to read slower (e.g. when the book is technical or specifically hard to read) I find my mind wanders a lot and I lose where I left off so I need to restart the page etc. You should definitely do what helps you understand better though! Hope you have a great day :)
