2 of the (supposedly) coequal branches, COTUS and POTUS, need a shared resource of a truly independent, apolitical think tank of subject matter experts above and beyond OMB that cannot be fired that will advise pros/cons/tradeoffs on enacting particular bills and policies whether they want to hear it or not. Adults who know stuff not beholden to corporate masters or political favoritism must have a voice to prevent disaster.
- jfengel 2y agoUnfortunately, I can't see how that would work. There are a lot of independent, apolitical think tanks. But Congress isn't compelled to listen to them. Nor can I imagine what would happen if we did compel them. Do you see a Congressman going to their voters and saying "Hey, I know you send me to support tariffs, but it turns out that the non-partisan Tax Foundation figures that's going to cost over 230,000 jobs." There is a fundamental conflict between democracy and "adults who know stuff". We have a strong belief in the former, and therefore we don't get the latter.
