I Spent 3 Years Building a Startup No One Wanted
TL;DR: I quit my job, built a startup, and watched it fail for 3 years. Just when I was about to give up, a small pivot changed everything. Now, it's a profitable SaaS making $500K ARR.
The Painful Lessons I Learned:
The Original Idea Flopped – I built a "smart" AI meeting scheduler, but nobody cared. The market was saturated, and our solution wasn’t 10x better.
Burning Through Savings – I thought "if I build it, they will come." They didn't. After $50K+ down the drain, I realized I needed to sell before building.
The Pivot That Saved Us – While talking to a few loyal users, I discovered they loved one tiny feature: an automatic follow-up email generator. That became our entire business.
Now? 500+ Paying Customers – Instead of fighting competitors in a crowded space, we niched down and built the best AI-powered follow-up tool. That small shift made all the difference.
My Takeaway: The startup world glorifies big ideas, but tiny pivots win battles. Listen to your users. Don’t be afraid to throw out your original plan.
Would love to hear from other founders—what was your biggest pivot?

- jimbohn 2y agoCurious to hear more about your product, how do you pitch it to customers? How does the funnel look like? I might be a customer!
- Userrr 2y agoGreat question! Our pitch is simple: "Never Forget a Follow-Up Again – AI-Powered, Personalized, and Instant" We help busy professionals close more deals, reconnect with leads, and maintain relationships effortlessly. Instead of manually writing follow-ups or forgetting them altogether, our AI suggests, drafts, and schedules them for you—context-aware, natural, and ready to send in seconds. Our Funnel: How We Get Customers 1⃣ Free Trial / No-Signup Demo – People can test the AI-generated follow-ups instantly. Seeing is believing. 2⃣ Cold Outreach & Content Marketing – We write about productivity, sales efficiency, and automation (HN, LinkedIn, Twitter). 3⃣ Product-Led Growth – Users love the tool → share it with teams → word-of-mouth grows. 4⃣ Conversion Hook – After a few AI-powered emails, users hit a limit. At that point, they already see the value and are happy to pay. Would love to hear your thoughts—does this sound useful for your workflow?
