Not surprised. If you looked at the sources (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43262650 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43262650) for Louis’ claims they seem to be poorly sourced. There could be a variety of reasons why aftermarket toners/inks weren’t recognised apart from intentional bricking.
