"computer science" in this case means what? Writing and debugging programs? Making web interfaces? Talking to AI's? Writing Excel macros?, ...? And who in the school faculty will be able to mentor, grade or correct such actions?
Or, are they going to spend the year doing abstract math and discussing data structures? Or are they going to learn how to use a word processor? By mid-late k-12, those who are into computers have been (far) past this stage. Those who aren't into them will struggle as they fail to see the point of some of these areas.
Perhaps a better use would be to take the time to give the students a handle on basic math (check book, bills), basic statistics and then provide some overview of what can and can't be done with computers. They can end with how scripts are used to modify the applications, or even showing them how simple scripts are created.
Let the geeks place out. The rest might have a better change to navigate their immediate future.
