Absolutely shameful behavior to forget our own history.
- butterlettuce 2y agoNon-sequitur. Anyway, the US didn’t have conscription issues though. The shameful behavior is on young Ukrainians abandoning their country in distress. Seriously, read up on it. It’s on traditional news outlet, not some weirdo podcaster.
- tmpz22 2y agoIndividual states did absolutely use conscription and drafts to fill manpower shortages during the revolutionary war. Manpower shortages themselves being a reflection of a shortage of volunteers. How do you think those conscriptions went? Do you think they were all cheerful? Didn't the current US president dodge the draft?
- dragonwriter 2y ago> Anyway, the US didn’t have conscription issues though. Yes, once states resorted to use of non-volunteer forces (starting with Massachusetts in early summer 1776, then New Hampshire in 1777 before the general call by Congress that year, and then more states after the call by Congress), there were “conscription issues” in the US, including fatal rioting over the perceived violation of rights. For reasons that are probably obvious, the neatly packaged mythology taught to grade school students that is all most Americans learn about the Revolutionary War doesn't focus on this, but it absolutely was a thing.

I think support for Ukraine is critical, but, given how that turned out for the French regime involved, this is perhaps the worst possible argument to deploy.
