He equates protectionism with stagnation, being boring, the road to poverty, socialism, etc. Yet, the US was very protectionist during it's accent to becoming the world's largest economy. The free market zealotry came later. (I'm not trying to say Trump's current plans have any merit - which seem to be without any strategic foresight or planning).
