"Withdrawing" to 1990 borders? You mean expelling the states that joined after 1990? I'm not sure that would go over well with the Baltics, Romania, Sweden and Finland. Withdrawal from NATO is voluntary and cannot be compelled.
- euroderf 2y agoYes, the Baltic states in particular were fanatical (um, "single-minded") about getting NATO security guarantees. Wild horses couldn't drag them away.
- throwaway48476 2y agoUSA leaving NATO was floated. I don't know how realistic any of it is, just that these are the terms being negotiated.
- microtonal 2y agoAt this point, is NATO still alive [1]? I don't think any other NATO country still trusts the US to help when a country has to invoke Article 5. NATO in its former shape has pretty much been dismantled over the course of last month. [1] NATO minus the US is still alive, of course.
- jopsen 2y agoThere are a lot of regional frameworks within NATO. The US doesn't lead all of them. But some of them are probably just paper (not all). I'd also find it hard to imagine the US not providing enablers like satellite targeting, etc. Or the US being unwilling to sell ammo.
- throwaway48476 2y agoThat might have been true last week.
- jwilk 2y agoYou forgot Poland. :-P
- ZeroTalent 2y agoThey will never let Poland go because it's a buffer for Germany.
- spbaar 2y agoIt will be a withdrawal of US troops and bases with a wink wink. And nothing but impeachment can compel the president to actually respond to an article V call.

- lovich 2y agolol, those agreements are just pieces of paper. Deals don't matter when the counterparty wont adhere to them and there is no third party forcing them to
