- ltbarcly3 2y agoASL? 18F DC
- adastra22 2y agoThis is subthread is certainly too reddit-like to be on HN, but I can't believe a government agency would name their department dealing with digital stuff 18F. This is exactly the connotation that comes to mind of anyone old enough.
- gjs4786 2y agoI came here with genuine curiosity.
- whirlwin 2y agoRelated: https://www.404media.co/github-is-showing-the-trump-administration-scrubbing-government-web-pages-in-real-time/ https://www.404media.co/github-is-showing-the-trump-administ... TLDR; they are removing woke content and functionality, e.g. related to DEI
- xyst 2y agoThat was last month. Today, it was announced the entire group will get 86’d https://fedscoop.com/gsa-shutters-18f-possibly-leaving-agencies-in-the-lurch/ https://fedscoop.com/gsa-shutters-18f-possibly-leaving-agenc... Probably best to fork or archive the repos. Wouldn’t be surprised if it gets nuked/erased by next week
- Sabinus 2y agoAn actual group driving efficiency and digitisation of government services? Why would Elon eliminate such a thing?
- alabastervlog 2y agoThat’s not the point of Elon’s actions, aside from generating headlines that let them throw chaff to make the casual observer think that might be something they’re doing and succeeding at.
- dboreham 2y agoFor the lulz.
- acdha 2y agoIf his true goal isn’t efficiency but axing regulators and profitable outsourcing opportunities, the last thing he wants is a group which shows that the government can be efficient, filled with smarter people who can contradict his pretexts when they aren’t supported by the facts. The USSR’s apparatchiks (their DOGE equivalent) were not fond of people who would point out errors their claims, either, because errors damaged the impression of the party as the source of truth.

- ronbenton 2y agoBad faith comment I assume. The most popular repo is some kind of guide. The other top ones are repos for sites like login.gov and government analytics
- meltyness 2y agoNot really, GSA is smart, I mean, it's 1200 repos. For clarity though, I would think software engineers would prefer to engineer their software with software, and not a bunch of disparate rules of varying quality communicated to people passively.
- meltyness 2y agoBTW I'm probably talking to myself here, but I'm a pretty avid follower of USG activities, I think that something like this shows clear value: https://playbook.usds.gov/ https://playbook.usds.gov/ Despite the slightly pessimistic view I expressed about the general character of the most starred 18F repos which I also distinctly admitted was probably a myopic view in light of their breadth.
- meltyness 2y agoAlso, you "assume bad faith"? What is this?

- dvtkrlbs 2y agoFor those wanting to archive all the repos: $ gh auth login $ gh repo list 18f --limit 4000 | while read -r repo _; do gh repo clone "$repo" "$repo" done
- jarvuschris 2y agoI made (refined an existing one I found in a gist) a little script recently that does this more efficiently with bare repos and bundles: https://github.com/JarvusInnovations/fed-git-backups https://github.com/JarvusInnovations/fed-git-backups
- Vingdoloras 2y agoBy only doing clones to get data from Github, you're losing anything stored in LFS. Run `git lfs fetch --all` inside each repo after cloning to make sure you have the large files, too.
- tomrod 2y agoUSDS, 4.2GB, 54 repos: gh repo list usds --limit 9999 --json sshUrl | jq -r '.[].sshUrl' | xargs -n1 git clone 18F, 37GB, 1,213 repos: gh repo list 18F --limit 9999 --json sshUrl | jq -r '.[].sshUrl' | xargs -n1 git clone I'm worries git lfs will be too large.

- OutOfHere 2y ago18F and other such "enablers" are an unnecessary antipattern in the age of AI. They were useful before, but AI is now a more democratic and more deeply embedded enabler. The reason why they're an antipattern is they force their ideas on everyone, resulting in groupthink, also blocking independent innovation.
- thephyber 2y agoEye roll. AI generated code is not that accurate or reliable. Maybe in several years if future LLM releases are less disappointing than ChatGPT 4.5… And it’s corrupt as hell if the US feds are going to be mandated to use an AI owned by the employee who is blindly chainsawing all of the institutional knowledge anywhere near the US government.
- OutOfHere 2y agoGuidelines are one thing, but I am against prescriptive requirements of any kind. They harm innovation significantly. Of course I don't approve of a particular AI being mandated. Currently, yes, AIs don't replace humans for code. AI only empowers the human to discover approaches that could help.
