- lawgimenez 2y agoI’m from the Philippines and there are already talks of concerns regarding our mutual defense treaty with the US. Taiwan is just above us and for sure can be easily sucked into a war.
- _t9ow 2y ago> concerns regarding our mutual defense treaty with the US I'm curious: Is there now widespread concern, or is this mainly a partisan issue among Filipino politicians? Are there any Filipino media reports discussing this issue that you'd recommend to me?
- lawgimenez 2y agoConcerns are not public but I am basing this on popular Filipino forums and Facebook groups which is very pro-US. I mean majority of us our very pro-US. Filipino media is not that great here, it sucks but I can't remember an opinion piece recommending we nuke up until this article below. https://usa.inquirer.net/167208/with-trumps-new-world-order-should-the-philippines-nuke-up https://usa.inquirer.net/167208/with-trumps-new-world-order-...
- saghm 2y agoAt this point, it seems like considering yourself a "US ally" is a strategic blunder. There's no reason to expect any sort of loyalty based on shared interests or collective security; I don't even think it's purely transaction at this point, because the entire pretense of the meeting with Zelensky was a demand for an absolutely absurd deal on mineral rights[0]. US foreign policy seems to be just as much about ego as anything else, and if you're not sufficiently deferential, it doesn't matter what you bring to the table. [0]: $500 billion in minerals, which is around seven times the value of all of the aid given to Ukraine so far: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/feb/20/stop-criticising-trump-and-sign-500bn-mineral-deal-us-official-advises-kyiv https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/feb/20/stop-criticisi...
