I read that as genuine belief in knowledge and skills in areas that Nate doesn't respect. Apparently he doesn't respect them enough to be able to tell if someone is faking them. It's less clear cut than his gaming fakery, but Musk's comments on sci-fi (including Iain M Banks Culture novels) are beyond cringe, somehow taking exactly the opposite message intended by the author.
