Roads are to enable quick deployment of troops and equipment. It’s what China build roads into Tibet and Xinjiang shortly after illegally annexing them. It reflects their priorities and fears.
- fuzzfactor 2y agoWhen Cuba became a communist threat, the lack of suitable infrastructure for a potentially massive military response and/or invasion from the US was quite obvious in the southern part of Florida. So the Florida Turnpike was rapidly built to reach from the long-settled part of north Florida, down to the much more isolated and undeveloped resort areas in the Miami area, of which Miami could almost be considered like a suburb of Havana at the time. When Cuba was still a free country it was not thought to be a problem historically if travel between Havana and Miami had always been vastly easier than between Miami and northern Florida. Anyway, it hardly ever snows in Florida, but it does rain a lot and roads can get slick because of that. Taking consideration of visibility, regardless of how overloaded a large truck or convoy may be during emergency conditions, if a constant speed of 100 MPH is maintained, each curve in the Turnpike is gradual, and slightly banked so that regardless of road slickness, vehicles will not skid toward the outside of the curve, nor the inside.
- fuzzfactor 2y agoMy whole life I've been aware that most people are completely ignorant about what Florida was like before runaway real estate development got underway. So it seems adequate sometimes to fill in a little technical info that others are most likely not too knowledgeable about. When the ignorance is shown to be greater than expected, that must be a sign that further info would be worthwhile, or at least food for thought. Anybody have any idea whether any kind of invasion of Cuba took place in that time frame?
- drysine 2y agoThe video talks about building a bypass around the most dangerous section of the Russia-Georgia-Armenia-Iran road. The part that goes through Georgia is called the Georgian Military Road and was built by the Russian Empire to enable the movement of troops to defend Georgia (at that time a Russian protectorate) from Persia (now Iran).
