- dang 2y agoThat heuristic doesn't work! Everyone always overestimates the provocations done by others and underestimates their own. If the distortion is 10x each way and you go with this perception, that makes for a 100x skew [1]. This is how we end up with a downward spiral and the war of all against all [2]. It always feels like the other person started it and did worse [3]. Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear [4]. What we need you to do instead is follow HN's rules regardless of how badly other people are breaking them or you feel they are. We need others to do that as well, of course—it's nothing personal.
