How does one get started doing this?

  Hardest part of getting your foot in the door is getting the clearance in the first place. I'd normally say the easiest way is to get hired as a government employee, go through the vetting process, then bounce a year or two after you get your ticket. With the way things are going with the US Government at the moment, I'm not so sure now.
