Our latest home has a confusing array of light switches. I picked up a Brother P-touch CUBE label maker (apparently a hit among all sorts of hobbies), and ended up deciding that the best way to go was text labels + color coding to indicate zones/functions (e.g., hot pink for garbage disposals). Works fantastic.
