I know why Apple didn't design it: it looks ugly as crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's worse or unfit for their purpose (though I have thoughts about adding MORE weight to your neck). But he asks why his friend could make it and Apple wouldn't have done the same is for the simple reason that it's ugly.

  I wouldn’t either as I’m pretty utilitarian. But it does matter to a portion of people and definitely matters to Apple from marketing perspective.
