I decompiled the library and fixed the issue (appending strings a char at a time and not reusing the stringbuilder). And then a colleague pointed out that simply recompiling the decompiled file also fixed the issue. After digging in the JIT compiler source, I learned that it had code to handle this issue, but it was tuned to the exact output of a modern compiler.
