The battery is already external and the compute is a tiny fraction of the size and weight of the HMD. To make any meaningful difference in the form factor, we'd need an entirely new generation of as yet invented display and lens stack. Maybe that happens in the next decade or so but it hasn't yet happened over the last decade of tens of billions of dollars invested by the largest companies in the world.
- makeitdouble 2y agoWe have tethered headsets like the Bigscreen Beyond [0] that get a lot smaller than the AVP. We're talking a fourth of the weight for about half the volume. The per eye resolution is smaller (2560x2560 vs 3660x3200) but not enough for the lens and screen to be significantly different IMHO. Lack of eye tracking would be more impacting, but we could probably get away with only a slightly bigger bump somewhere ?
