I might have been excited about the Apple Vision Pro if I could, in addition to the features it has now, hook it to a PC and use it as a standard VR headset. Imagine that you could use the onboard processing to enhance what's coming from the PC, so that your GPU can send a higher FPS stream at a lower frame rate and the AVP would do upsampling and etc. AND you can use it as a productivity device with your other Apple crap!
Instead it's just another Apple Device (TM) which is $3500 with an inferior set of features compared to other products. I can abide by inferior features with my Mac (vs Linux) since it does most of what I want, and my iPhone (vs. Android) since I prefer an OS that spies a bit less than Google's, but in a VR/AR headset I want to be able to play VR/AR games the way Gabe intended!
I don't hate Apple's products at all, I like most of them for what I need them for and some are better (their AppleTV boxes are great), but I don't know why they insist on sniffing their own farts sometimes.
- wpm 2y agoIf you could run software you bought on Steam on your AVP, you wouldn’t be forced to repurchase that software on the App Store so Apple can inspect the code you want to run and skim their “share” of the profits. Can’t have that!

- paulcole 2y ago> I might have been excited about the Apple Vision Pro if I could, in addition to the features it has now, hook it to a PC and use it as a standard VR headset This is a roundabout way to say that you were never going to be excited about the Apple Vision Pro. > Instead it's just another Apple Device Please list the Apple products that this doesn’t apply to. > but in a VR/AR headset I want to be able to play VR/AR games the way Gabe intended It’s extremely clear that the first Apple Vision Pro was never going to be prioritizing gaming.
- LPisGood 2y agoI’m not sure what is the point of this comment. GP says “I don’t like it because X, Y and Z” and you come to say “Well it is X, Y, and Z so of course you don’t like it”
- paulcole 2y agoThat’s not what they said. They said they would’ve liked it if it had X, Y, Z. That’s like me saying I would like the Sun if it rose in the west and was lime green. I’m never going to like the Sun! There is no chance of it.
- ok_dad 2y agoThat’s a dumb argument, this is a headset that they could have done anything with including adding OpenXR VR support, not a random nonsensical idea you had about a star that is not like our own.
- paulcole 2y agoNo, it’s not a dumb argument. “They” are Apple. About 40 years of history tells us that whatever dork-dream of openness isn’t happening on products Apple releases.
- ok_dad 2y agoOpenXR is basically the standard for VR these days, not some "dork dream of openness". Also, I don't get why you're being a hater, there is no point to your comments other than to shit all over my initial comment for zero reason. Did I accidentally do something to you like shit in your cereal?
- paulcole 2y agoJust because I think you’re making a bad point doesn’t make me a hater. You’re saying, “I would have liked this Apple device if it embraced an open industry standard.” Did you really believe that this is something Apple would do, based on all available evidence?
- reaperducer 2y ago$3,500 is a lot of money to lay out. What made you spend so much on a device that was never marketed for your use case?
- ok_dad 2y agoI didn’t buy one, I said I could have been excited.
