I found this odd when I first read about it. Usually human trafficking involves isolating the victim, which is why it's so prevalent in the maritime industry - victims won't have many opportunities to escape or call attention to themselves. But in this scenario, the traffickers have only gone half way, kidnapping the victims but then giving them access to the outside world via the internet. Presumably their internet access is monitored, but at that point, why are you bothering to pay for airfare to kidnap people who already don't command very high salaries for a job that they could be doing anywhere in the world? Are wages really a significant expense for an operation like this?
I recall when I first heard about this happening, it was suggested that the mafias that manage these enterprises were effectively self-governing. It obviously required some level of technical sophistication to pull something like this off to begin with, so they obviously aren't stupid. Did they just make a bad bet in thinking that they would be left alone by the authorities?
