The people we bought our house from left an old P-333 GW2000. I turned it into a smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org/ http://www.smoothwall.org/). The routers the ISPs have drawbacks like not supporting enough simultaneous connections (usually do to RAM constraints). So I dropped their router, put the smoothwall in its place, and never looked back.
