Which Knot Is Stronger? Humans Aren't Great Judges
- bell-cot 2y ago> Humans are pretty good at guessing whether a towering stack of dishes in the sink will topple over ... > But a new study highlights one area of intuitive physics that’s deceptively difficult: judging how strong a knot is. Zzz. People do a lot of stacking stuff, to train their brains on what does & doesn't work. Vs. how many people regularly make & use various knots, to get any such training? Yeah. But if their "new study" had included people with such experience, then SA wouldn't have had yet another a clicky headline, and fluff article.
- anenefan 2y agoEh ... how strong a knot is does not exactly correlate with how hard it is to undo ... so there's a big fail on someone's part right there - unless it's meant after it breaks the knot that endured more will be tighter. How strong a knot is can be gauged at what tension it either slips or breaks. When joining wire it can be surprising as the size and type of steel alloy used varies. Rope types likewise lend themselves less to some types of knots - and for pulling a decent tension with a vehicle, none A to D would be used around my way by anyone accustomed to snigging logs or stuck vehicles.
