Brazil mayor was shot in 'fake attack' for election boost but lost in landslide
- jaybro867 2y ago[dead]
- duxup 2y agoIs being mayor in Brazil that lucrative that paying $88,000 is ... worth it? Or is this more about the role / just wanting to be mayor. This whole plan seems very much not worth it, granted sometimes crime just isn't logical.
- Waterluvian 2y agoDon’t forget to normalize for region. That’s quite a lot of money in Brazil.
- tough 2y agoA bought out mayor can then siphon out millions of public money through deals etc, so idk
- zanellato19 2y agoThat's the salary but a mayor can hire so many people, like his entire family. So many small cities(and not so small) have entire families that don't do anything other than being relatives to the mayor.
- Terr_ 2y agoIn the US it was a long struggle to abolish that kind of corrupt spoils system [0], although the current administration is trying to bring it back again. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoils_system https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoils_system

- piva00 2y agoThis "no, you" kind of response is really, really boring. At least try to bring concrete examples of the behaviour so a discussion can be had, in the least to check if the assumed behaviour is of the same kind and degree...
- Terr_ 2y agoWhen everything Trump is doing is so nakedly illegal / unconstitutional / fascist, the best "defense" is to try to trick people into looking at something else... until it's too late. Originally I was going to link to the Trump's "Schedule F" plan, but it seems merely bringing back the spoils system has just now become quaint and obsolete: Trump went a step further and formally signed an executive order declaring that the entire executive branch must ignore all decisions or court-orders by any judge, because he alone (with presumptive immunity from future prosecution) decides what happens to be lawful at all times. https://old.reddit.com/r/law/comments/1isvzgu/the_full_executive_order_is_out_this_is_the/ https://old.reddit.com/r/law/comments/1isvzgu/the_full_execu... Even Emperor Palpatine was more circumspect!
- HocusLocus 2y agoYou seem to be having a discussion anyway. Just pretend I did the same thing.
- DANmode 2y agoNepotism and payola in US politics just began this year, or in 2016? Fucking LOL.
- tweetle_beetle 2y agoI'm no expert on US politics, but I'm pretty sure yesterday's executive order is unprecedented in this regard: > Therefore, in order to improve the administration of the executive branch and to increase regulatory officials’ accountability to the American people, it shall be the policy of the executive branch to ensure Presidential supervision and control of the entire executive branch. > > Moreover, all executive departments and agencies, including so-called independent agencies, shall submit for review all proposed and final significant regulatory actions to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) within the Executive Office of the President before publication in the Federal Register. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/ensuring-accountability-for-all-agencies/ https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/ensu...
- kelseydh 2y agoPolitical positions are rarely about the money, they're about the power.
- teytra 2y agoBut those two are often closely related...
- 0dayz 2y agoIt wouldn't surprise me if historically people have tried similar-ish strategies of trying to taking advantage of people's "rally behind the flag". There's various historical examples of people doing extremely silly things for affection or attention. That said it's utterly disgusting to abuse it.
