Unfortunately, Google has set the bar incredibly high for killing "yet another" anything.
The three examples of other Amazon products killed from the article are the Fire Phone (1 year), Amazon Dash (5 years), and Amazon Tap (2 years). The Fire Phone and Amazon Tap were failures from the jump, although the Tap was just a different packaging for the Alexa service. Dash was a novel product/service that was replaced by recurring purchases.
- habitue 2y agoYeah, like come on. Amazon kills things when they're truly truly unpopular, and does everything they can to grandfather paying customers on legacy offerings. Google kills off things that are a maintenance burden for them, they dont care who is using it. Amazon has their pathologies, but killing off beloved services isn't really one of them
- golly_ned 2y agoAWS is notorious for keeping services around well past their expiration date simply to uphold their promise not to break customers. It’s admirable, but having worked on one of those effectively dead services while building a new service literally thousands of times more successful, it was flotsam we couldn’t wait to outsource to our economical, frugal peers in Bangalore.
