An AP investigation reveals that U.S. tech giants Microsoft and OpenAI have supplied advanced AI tools to Israel’s military, enabling rapid targeting of suspected militants in Gaza and Lebanon. Post-October 7, Israel’s use of these commercial AI models surged by 200x, processing intercepted communications and surveillance data to accelerate strikes. However, civilian deaths have soared—over 50,000 fatalities in Gaza and Lebanon, with 70% of Gaza's infrastructure destroyed.
Internal documents show Microsoft’s servers stored 13.6 petabytes of military data (350x the Library of Congress’s digital capacity) and a $133M defense contract. Experts warn this marks the first confirmed use of commercial AI in active warfare, raising ethical alarms over flawed algorithms, biased data, and Silicon Valley’s role in autonomous conflict. AI Now Institute’s Heidy Khlaaf calls it a precedent for “unethical and unlawful warfare,” questioning tech’s accountability in life-or-death decisions.
