I want them to do the same study with managers. And maybe executives. Does relying on employees kill the same critical thinking skills? Or is this a skill that has to be cultivated like every other skill?

From my experience it does. A lot of VPs and higher have no direct experience with the things they are responsible for so can be easily manipulated by smooth talkers. I just attended a strategy meeting where a lot of higher ranks asked questions that clearly showed they have no idea.
