I'd agree that on a personal level, vigilance and discipline are important to minimize bloat. On a collective level - you need courage and love and vigilance and discipline. You need the courage to go hey, Bill Gates - you are ruining our industry and since I love humanity - I will oppose your kind. I will use my courage to speak up and fight against evil. Our industry isn't lacking in people who can sit down and write good code. It is severely lacking in people who have courage and love to benefit more than just themselves.
