Just look at some recent scandals, like Cambridge Analytica. Harvesting and analyzing the right data makes it possible to influence democratic elections and referendums. Selling you stuff is great, but tricking you to vote for lower taxes for their trillion-dollar corporations or tariffs/other negative effects for their competitors is better.
