Corporate greed did this.
- compiler-devel 2y agoThey both did, but governments enabled corporations to do it.
- RGamma 2y agoHow would government realistically preserve a (in hindsight) fragile cultural phenomenon? OTOH a ~difficult mandatory PC/internet operator's license might have done it. Now that reminds of the weird Internetführerschein ("internet driver's license") courses for nontechnical folk in Germany. Though these were entirely optional and so not cool.
- fragmede 2y agoarchive.org could have been a government funded initiative by the librarians. (not libertarians)
- RGamma 2y agoThat wouldn't have prevented tech bros from hijacking the cultural momentum or commoditizing attention. Even a maximum fidelity web archive would drown in the noise just the same.
- codr7 2y agoIt's basically the same thing in western countries these days.
- szundi 2y agoHomo sapiens did this
- codr7 2y agoMore importantly, we allowed it to happen.
- kh_hk 2y agoWe did this.
- marginalia_nu 2y agoIt's really a tragedy of the commons situation. We're all to blame for the decrepit state of this shared resource.
