Show HN: Task-Performing Voice AI Agent for Cooking, Built After Reddit Feedback
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- ShenSeanChen 2y agoI built ChefVoiceAI.com after noticing a common problem in this Reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cooking/comments/1i1tqr1/how_do_you_deal_with_messy_hands_and_recipes/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Cooking/comments/1i1tqr1/how_do_you... The problem: 1. Cooks struggle with messy hands while trying to follow recipes. 2. Existing voice assistants can't navigate complex recipes or set context-aware timers. 3. Phones and printed recipes become unusable with greasy fingers. Technical solution: 1. Voice-controlled recipe navigation with natural language understanding. 2. Dynamic timer setting based on recipe steps. 3. Cross-device sync using WebSocket connections. 4.Attempted with several speech-to-text techs and a custom NLU layer (Python/Next.js). Key challenges: 1. Handling ambiguous voice commands in a noisy kitchen environment 2. Synchronizing updates when having multiple timers 3. Normalizing recipes from various formats (PDFs, websites, handwritten scans) Current stack: 1. Supabase for real-time database 2. Custom voice pipeline (very low latency, check out this live demo video: https://youtu.be/XKxoHOIxyjA https://youtu.be/XKxoHOIxyjA) I'd appreciate feedback on: 1. Preferred recipe import formats 2. Commonly used voice command patterns while cooking 3. Additional timer management / task-performing features you'd find useful. There's a 7-day free trial available. I'm around to answer questions and discuss the technical aspects of the project.I'm around to answer questions and discuss the technical aspects of the project here: 1. https://x.com/ShenSeanChen https://x.com/ShenSeanChen 2. https://discord.gg/TKKPzZheua https://discord.gg/TKKPzZheua 3. https://linkedin.com/in/shen-sean-chen https://linkedin.com/in/shen-sean-chen
- atmanactive 2y agoGreat idea, and something like this is definitely needed. However, I didn't signup as I didn't see any pricing info. Also, from the demo video, it is obvious that the whole thing just blocks several times. That's unacceptable. Furthermore, the answers are very laggy, completely destroying any notion of a conversation. It feels stiff/clunky. Keep improving and maybe one day this will be a useful tool.
- ShenSeanChen 2y agoThanks so much for your feedback! Will add more clearer pricing info. Also will allow a few times of free trial before adding credit cards. The lagging is due to ElevenLabs API calls and slower internet at home using hotspot. When using self-hosted TTS models the lagging is negligible. Thanks again for your feedback!
- atmanactive 2y agoAha, ok, I understand. Looking forward to a version supporting on-device TTS then. Keep up the good work! The idea and the direction it is heading is definitely awesome. Here in UK, we have a service called Gousto [0] which delivers meal ingredients and instructions to homes. I would, naturally, like to be able to import those recipes into your app and have it assist me while cooking. Check it out! [0] https://www.gousto.co.uk/ https://www.gousto.co.uk/
- atmanactive 2y agoBTW, I just installed SherpaTTS [0] via F-Droid and was blown away with TTS quality. [0] https://github.com/woheller69/ttsEngine https://github.com/woheller69/ttsEngine
- ShenSeanChen 2y agoHi again! I have updated the pricing info on the landing page https://ChefVoiceAI.com https://ChefVoiceAI.com now
- atmanactive 2y agoGreat. Signed up immediately.
- atmanactive 2y agoNitpick: your signup page shows "forgot your password?" UI affordance which is applicable to SignIn page but not to SignUp page.
- atmanactive 2y agoAfter confirming my email address, my browser is stuck on the page showing "Loading with Protected Routes..." for a full minute. I was about to close the tab, then it continued all on it's own. That loading time is a bit too long and/or the UI doesn't reflect that the user needs to wait a long time.
- ShenSeanChen 2y agoThese are super valuable feedback to me! Thanks so much! More updates coming soon!
- atmanactive 2y agoFew times I was typing chefvoice.ai instead of chefvoiceai.com, only to be greeted by a DNS error :) My recommendation: get chefvoice.ai domain as well and silently redirect to chefvoiceai.com (or the other way around, whatever).
