When you are the dominant world power, you just don't let others determine your strategy, as simple as that.
Attempts at curbing AI will come from those who are losing the race. There's this interview where Edward Teller recalls how the USSR used a moratorium in nuclear testing to catch up with the US on the hydrogen bomb, and how he was the one telling the idealist scientists that that was going to happen.
- lamp_book 2y agoI read in Supermen (book on Cray) that the test moratorium was a strategic advantage for the US since labs here could simulate nuclear weapons using HPC systems.
- jcarrano 2y agoI was referring to the 1958 moratorium I'd be surprised if they could simulate weapons with the computers of the time. Here [1] is the clip from Teller's interview. In another clips he says that he believes it was inevitable that the Soviets would come up with an H-bomb on their own. - lamp_book 2y agoOk yeah this was a treaty that came much later - didn’t realize there were multiple agreements made over the years.
- aucisson_masque 2y agobut how long is the us even going to be dominant ? it's well known that china has long caught up with the us, in almost every way, and is on the verge of surpassing it on the others. just look at deepseek, as efficient as openai for a fraction of the cost. Baidu, alibaba ai and so on. China's economy remains on track to surpass that of the United States within just five years, and yet they did sign that agreement. In fact most countries did. India too. it's not the case of the looser making new rule, it's the big boy discussing how they are going to handle the situation and the retarded ones thinking they are too good for that.
- Aurornis 2y ago> China's economy remains on track to surpass that of the United States within just five years, and yet they did sign that agreement. China has signed on to many international agreements that it has absolutely no interest in following or enforcing. Intellectual property is the most well known. They’re party to various international patent agreements but good luck trying to get them to enforce anything for you as a foreigner.
- Axsuul 2y ago> China's economy remains on track to surpass that of the United States within just five years, and yet they did sign that agreement. Are you actually saying this in the year 2025?
- hector126 2y ago> China's economy remains on track to surpass that of the United States within just five years, and yet they did sign that agreement. I'd be very happy to take a high stakes, longterm bet with you if that's your earnest position.
- cutemonster 2y ago> and yet they did sign that agreement. Of course they aren't going to follow it, just sign it. They're bright people
- cakealert 2y agoThis is the correct answer. However the attempts are token and they know it too. Just an attempt to appear to be doing something for the naive information consumers, aka useful idiots.
