We knew that when Tesla was ready to get serious about autonomy they would be doing something similar to Waymo. Waymo's general strategy is not particularly novel, it's similar to what Zoox and Cruise and a bunch of Chinese companies are/were doing. The general strategy was arrived at after a great deal of trial and error and hard earned lessons that Elon opted to ignore in favour of magic. Elon committed Tesla to it's reliance on magic, and in a way it worked, because chumps paid handsomely for the privilege of living vicariously through Elon's narcissistic delusions. With the release of HW2 and HW3 I tried to warn them with long, well sourced, technically sound arguments in the Tesla forums, and as you can imagine, all they were able to hear was blasphemy.
