Greek name (in Latin) : Thera. Santorini is a modern name, derived from "Saint Irene". Note this time of year there are very few tourists. A friend of mine in a local, born and grew up there, have pinged her and will ask about the state of play. Let's hope Akrotiri isn't damaged. It's an incredible site, and I there finally connected to the (relatively) ancient peoples, by being a town just like any other town I knew, and they were there, walking down those streets, living their lives, just as I am now.
