  The assault on an imperialst-regime-change-cum-bureucratic-excess-spending tool that had bought off half the world's political, press and art world, couldn't have happened sooner.

    There's always going to be some sunk costs ( eg. military has at least a 33% overhead). The reason they are doing it like this, is to get blame material on everyone ( even when it's not justified). In the current case in the US, it doesn't even have to be real anymore. And they just want to ignore courts that are in place to protect democracy. Musk just needs to claim it on Twitter and that's it. A divided country and soon an authoritarian regime. I'm 100% sure none of the scandals will reveal how much Trump put in his pocket with his protection to stay in his hotels... at a premium cost. Or how else he can fill his pockets ( eg. the extreme covid subsidies for the "hospitality" sector).
