More than just a plain fume event, if people in charge of aircraft had difficulty interpreting ATC directions and had no recollection of landing and taxiing that is a clear near miss. One more thing going wrong could have turned it into a disaster. I am additionally surprised that captain’s death did not make it mandatory to report.
