Memory-Holing Jan. 6: What Happens When You Try to Make History Vanish?
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- bubbajones 2y agowhy is this on this board? does not belong here at all
- rbanffy 2y agoSome very technical people were requested to delete a historically important dataset. We, the hackers, are the ones people ask to make things like this actually happen.
- hn_acker 2y agorbanffy gave two of the reasons (historical importance and obedience or lack thereof by technical employees). My other reason is that the article reminded me of earlier discussions on Hacker News about actual and perceived government censorship (especially wrt Twitter), mass propaganda (fear of which was a motivator of the TikTok ban), and (actual and alleged) large-scale crimes (riots, drug trade from the US southern border, and illegal immigration). I also had perhaps-unreliable impression that Hacker News tends to be sensitive to revisionism of history and truth in real contexts (communist China) and fictional ones (Nineteen Eighty-Four)
- ttyprintk 2y agoHackers are removing digitized evidence of a crime. This board should not care whether they’re the authorities or part of a counterculture.
- rbanffy 2y agoI sincerely hope backups are preserved. One shouldn't mess with important historical records.
- ttyprintk 2y agoOf course, the online copies will be scrubbed: https://www.npr.org/2025/02/11/nx-s1-5293447/jan-6-evidence-captiol-riot-donald-trump https://www.npr.org/2025/02/11/nx-s1-5293447/jan-6-evidence-...
