Online harassment can quickly escalate beyond the point of being ignorable, even for the most resilient individuals. Swatting is the classic extreme case of that.
Even foregoing those extreme examples, there are plenty of other impossible-to-ignore ways for people to harass you (prank pizza orders, for example). Ignoring some people will cause them to escalate the extent to which they will try to get your attention.
- pino82 2y agoYes, it _can_. Sure. You rlly think the vogons have made prank pizza orders, swatted him, or anything like that? C'mon, get real. Here is a new comment that you can downvote just because you hate the statement. He didn't get as much appreciation and accolade on social media as he wanted. That's basically it. Without knowing any details about the case. I know humans, and the story is obvious. ;) ... maybe that's what they meant with 'clout-chaser'?
- BoxFour 2y agoMy point is the idea that you can always “just ignore them” is pretty outdated advice from the early internet days. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just escalates disturbed people. No matter how much tolerance you have for annoying behavior, some people will find a way to push beyond it. All it takes is, literally, one person with no sense of boundaries to make your life miserable once you’re on their radar. In this particular case? I don’t know. Maybe something happened that would have crossed your threshold, maybe not. It's not that big a leap from sending threatening e-mails to harassing your friends and family to get your attention, or making phone calls. Whatever it was, clearly they reached their breaking point. But no matter where your breaking point is, there are always people out there willing to cross it over things that seem utterly trivial.
