I think the idea here is that a new class of jet aircraft fuel could be fielded which could be used as is for traditional jet aircraft, but which is also capable of being used as a safe and efficient source of hydrogen (via a catalyst) for proposed hydrogen-fueled aircraft. Am I understanding this correctly?
- naishoya 2y agoA key part for me is the platinum and lignin and I'm only interested in the same way I might be interested in an article including 'gold and palladium ...' Which is to say, with morbid curiosity as to both the cost and toxicity of the idea, and a little bit of surprise that safety and efficiency would be included as reasons to pursue this research.
- PaulHoule 2y agoLignin is a notorious unwanted substance (from making paper for instance) that you could make a fortune of if you could make something wanted out of it. People have tried so many bad ideas to be rid of it, such as GMO trees that don't contain lignin -- doesn't work because they get shredded mercilessly by bugs.
- PaulHoule 2y agoSee https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_organic_hydrogen_carrier https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_organic_hydrogen_carrie... there are some organic chemicals which you can add and remove hydrogen to, so you can hydrogenate the carrier and get a chemical with more hydrogen in it, dehydrogenate the carrier to get the hydrogen, then ship the carrier back to the depot to rehydrogenate it.
