The level of data collection described in the article (I didn’t spot much detail, only that it’s more than is immediately obvious) is:
A. completely expected from Chinese software
B. Seemingly on par with the likes of any US big-tech firm
Overall, I would say “ho-hum” who would have expected US officials to call for a ban on DeepSeek app??
- zamalek 2y agoI think it's the fear of what the CCP would do with your data being more on the malice end of the spectrum vs. incompetence. Big USA tech is usually a thorn in the government's side when it comes to surveillance, where big China tech is essentially (more precisely, lawfully) complicit.
- d0mine 2y agoI see that Snowden spectacle was all for nothing.
- zamalek 2y agoThat would be incompetence: US big tech failed to protect data against government spying, I also placed it towards one end of a spectrum. One government also kills (Tiananmen Square) vs engaging in chemical/"non-lethal" against their citizens.
- amarcheschi 2y agoOne government kills The other one, kills too
- amarcheschi 2y agoAt the end of the day, China tech is obligated to comply with Chinese law the same way that Facebook and Google (...) are subject to share eu citizen data if asked by the us government. I don't think Chinese companies are happy if they have to spend more to implement infrastructure to retrieve and share similar data I also don't think big tech USA cares much about people's privacy, as shown by WhatsApp saving unencrypted backups on drive https://www.reddit.com/r/netsec/comments/w2rba2/the_workings_of_whatsapps_backups_and_why_you/ https://www.reddit.com/r/netsec/comments/w2rba2/the_workings...
