I went to an Amazon Fresh store soon after it opened, and the store was clogged with people trying to figure out the smart carts and how to use their phones to pay or get discounts on certain items.
I'm sure it's better now, because everyone who had a hard time with it has given up and isn't shopping there anymore, but for physical retail, losing potential customers isn't worth the added value of extra data gathering.
- marssaxman 2y agoI have not visited an Amazon Fresh store, but there was an Amazon Go convenience store near where I worked a few years ago, and that experience was effortless: you bloop your phone on the entry gate, walk in, look around, grab whatever you want, and then just leave. A moment later, your phone vibrates, and you have the receipt. I can see why Amazon might prefer to license out their tech instead of scaling it up to run their own full-size, low-margin business chain, though.
