The air quality in the San Joaquin Valley has been horrible in recent months. Many days 100-140, unhealthy for sensitive groups, in a band from Bakersfield to Sacramento. Housing costs in the SJ valley are on average half the CA median, but I would not move there. Air just collects and sometimes there's an inversion layer (simplified) More desirable locations are roughly twice the CA median or more.
