I guess ten years is long enough that young people don't know what a difference this made. Before Lets Encrypt, HTTPS was a luxury. The process of getting an encrypted HTTP connection for your clients was complicated because the certificate vendors had some sort of pespective of themselves as providing authentication of the certificate holder as an entity, not just authentication that the certificate holder was the domain owner. So all of your internet activities were written on the back of a postcard until it came time to checkout.
Nowadays, it's the odd unencrypted website connection that is the exception. This is definitely one of the changes for the better.
