GTK's X11 Back End Now Deprecated, Planned for Removal in GTK 5
- sylware 2y agoI am writting my own wayland compositor for AMDGPU (RISC-V assembly... running on x86_64). Now, I am thinking more about it, multi-display handling MUST be done at the rendering toolkit level, certainly not with some blurry upscaling of wayland application surface. A toolkit to handle multi-display properly, must get those properties (on top of the wayland color surface depth/format): physical size, typical view distance, PPI (Pixels-Per-Inch). Dunno yet if wayland does handle all of them in order to tell the rendering toolkit. Basically, the rendering toolkit/application needs those in order to create the "right wayland surface" for an output and configure its rendering properly to this very output. If I recall properly a wayland application is notified of much of all this. An output could be a "merged" set of displays with the same critical "properties". In the end, a wayland application should, for each of its surfaces, care of only one "output". If many "outputs" with very different core properties get to "scan-out" the same wayland surface --> omega dirty mess.
- fithisux 2y agoOK, but still Xorg is a cross-platform solution, it works in Windows, ReactOS, OS2 and hopefully sometime in Haiku-OS and others. There is OpenMotif and Tk.
- sillywalk 2y agoHaiku has had an X11 compatibility layer for a few years now. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31167562 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31167562 https://www.haiku-os.org/blog/waddlesplash/2022-01-10_haiku_contract_report_december_2021/ https://www.haiku-os.org/blog/waddlesplash/2022-01-10_haiku_...
- fithisux 2y agoInteresting, thank you.
- tuna74 2y agoYeah, but GTK5 will not target it.
- bitwize 2y agoYes, but Mr. Anderson, what good is a cross-platform window system, if no one wants to develop for or support it? Enjoy your old and busted toolkits for your old and busted window system. The Linux ecosystem has chosen Wayland. The removal of X code paths from relevant toolkits has begun; I'm sure Qt will follow suit soon enough.
