The infamous Quantel "Airbrush" patent war was pretty crazy. A bunch of companies settled with Quantel rather than fight even though the patent claim was clearly bogus. Fortunately, Adobe decided to go all-in on fighting it and it was apparently a huge battle. Thanks to that, ordinary mortals were able to have soft-edged airbrush strokes in not just Photoshop but every cheap and open-source paint program.
