Democrat teams up with movie industry to propose website-blocking law
- theandrewbailey 2y agoPiracy is a service problem. Also, if buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing.
- ConspiracyFact 2y agoPiracy isn’t stealing, period.
- perihelions 2y agoThis is the same congressperson who named a bill after Aaron Swartz, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5064448 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5064448 ("Rep. Zoe Lofgren Introduces Aaron's Law [pdf] (house.gov)" (2013))
- schoen 2y agoFor those who weren't following it at the time, one thing that Aaron was famous for was helping organize a campaign against an earlier form of this legislation in 2011 and 2012. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz#Opposition_to_the_Stop_Online_Piracy_Act_(SOPA) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz#Opposition_to_the... (Not that Zoe Lofgren has somehow signed up to agree with Aaron's positions about everything.)
- jauntywundrkind 2y agoI fucking love Public Knowledge. They have been around for a while & just amazing on so many fronts. The choice quote here: > Although Lofgren said her proposed Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act "preserves the open Internet," consumer advocacy group Public Knowledge described the bill as a "censorious site-blocking" measure "that turns broadband providers into copyright police at Americans' expense." Sort of sucks that California is a blue state whose politicians are reliably/consistently/predictably under the utter control of the movie industry! Not great! It'd be nice to see a progressive party that doesn't have such major pro-control pro-capitalist tendencies.
- wmf 2y agoSo instead of having ISPs enforce the law, we could... create the Great Firewall of America paid for by... Americans' tax dollars?
