Rents vary depending on where you live -- can be anywhere from $450 (NZD) a week and up. For example, I have friends who rent in Christchurch and Wellington, and they're paying $650 NZD a week (for a three-bedroom townhouse) and $550 NZD a week (for a two-bedroom apartment), respectively.
You might find something for less, but places with cheaper rent also might be older, cold, leaky, and drafty.
