EDIT: 在朝非常, 在野平常
(I get three very different reverse translations of the above from three different engines, so in case it helps I had been attempting to riff on emergency exits vs calm hearts. originally inspired by https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42851495 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42851495)

It has to be very classically weighted, if you hadnt had it marked as cháo [0] surely kaizen can't be the main way in which orgs fail to reinvent the wheel.. https://pldb.io/blog/chrisLattner.html https://pldb.io/blog/chrisLattner.html >Though all the ML compilers today are basically reinventing APL. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42852660 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42852660
- 082349872349872 2y agoDeepL returned "Very much in the government, very much in the field." Dulles seems to have been reflecting on a result of game theory that says it can pay off for an asshole in a positive sum game to attempt to take more than their numeric share of the positive margin off the table. If kaizen is the way to approach local optima, do we have a single word to describe seeking global optima? (someone once said compiler optimisations would more honestly be called ameliorations; I guess that could make a "local optimum" also an "ameliorum" point?) What's the usual connotation of 非? Thus far I only know it from emergency exit, so reading "not-" to form "unusual/abnormal exit" seemed perfectly logical. EDIT: compare 非ユークリッド幾何学, 非鉄金属, ...

- 082349872349872 2y agoSo, actually looking in my dead-tree kanji dictionary yielded a small table of the differences between 非…, 不…, 無…, and 未…: 非 negative judgement 不 negation of a state or action 無 negation of existence 未 negation of existence to date (=not yet) so I guess "unfortunate exit" is very parallel to "emergency exit" and my previous examples were more exceptional usages.
- gsf_emergency 2y agoDayum that sounds like a helpful dict. Other reasons for picking it? Edit: the gap seems smaller than I'd expect when one sorts them by usage? https://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/lexi-mf/idiom.php?word=%E9%9D%9E https://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/lexi-mf/idiom.php?wor... https://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/lexi-mf/idiom.php?word=不 https://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/lexi-mf/idiom.php?wor... On Dulles.. I like YC's very parallel usage of "asshole" here (helpful notation+ seems like they hired a cyborg (ofc) to do the translation?) https://coralcap.co/2022/02/why-japanese-startups-dont-apply-to-yc/ https://coralcap.co/2022/02/why-japanese-startups-dont-apply... ( in Dulles' intended context, both parties are (usually) assholes, and here, it takes some.. cycles .. to look out for the other ones :)
