In 1859, 24 Rabbits 'Colonized' a New Continent–A Biologist Tells the Story
- hilbert42 2y agoWhen I was a kid rabbit shooters would often hawk their kill from door to door. Usually they were skinned and degutted but with kidneys and liver remaining. It was said that if a rabbit had myxomatosis (aka myxo) these organs would appear spotty (even if they were myxo does not infect humans). My mother was always wary of rabbits sold this way and usually preferred to buy them in shops. Also, back then it was about the cheapest meat one could buy. I love rabbit, in stews, baked and so on but I haven't eaten it in years as it's so hard to get in shops where I am. I cannot understand why Australians no longer eat rabbit given the ongoing problem we have with them—there's definitely no shortage. Rabbit meat is very lean and thus healthy. It also tastes great.
