I visited Poland in Summer 2023 and this guy was celebrated in some way almost anywhere I went. There is a statue of him in front of the WW2 museum in Gdansk which many consider the best of its kind in Europe.
Mr. Pilecki was a Polish nationalist. He didn't want Hitler ruling Poland. After the war he felt the same way about Stalin and viewed him as just another tyrant and fought the Communists. Poland's leaders at the time were weak men who were threatened by this national hero opposing them. Sadly they did the only thing they could do and that was to kill him.
The artist Bansky has a great quote:
"They say you die twice. Once when you stop breathing and the second, a bit later on, when somebody mentions your name for the last time."
If that is true I believe that Witold Pilecki will live forever.
- Qem 2y ago> If that is true I believe that Witold Pilecki will live forever. I'm a bit pessimistic here. As the last remnants of the generation that lived through WWII die of old age, people are starting to forget the lessons of that time period, and humanity risks repeating the same mistakes again. The fact now we have billionaires doing the Nazi salute in public, and how the events in Gaza for the past years were reminiscent of what happened in WWII Warsaw ghetto are evidence of this.
