When I was a kid in Detroit before getting my ham radio license I was both a short wave listener (SWL) as well as a TV DX'er. There was a time when most if not all TV stations went off the air at 2 am. When that happened long distance stations in an earlier time zone could be received. In Detroit that was Illinois, Wisconsin stations primarily although I got St. Louis once.
